Membership

Membership Benefits
The first benefit of membership in the Marine Corps League is to enjoy the camaraderie that we who are Marines share. More importantly, as Marines we were taught from day-one to seek leadership responsibilities. As members of the Marine Corps League we demonstrate our commitment to that principal through self-example in our local community, and by supporting our fellow Marines and worthwhile activities within our area.

Types of Memberships
There are two types of entry-level memberships available to those interested in becoming members of the Marine Corps League. They are:
Regular membership is available for those with honorable service as Marines or FMF Navy Corpsman as outlined below in “Regular Membership Eligibility Criteria.”
Associate membership is available for those with no Marine Corps or Navy FMF Corpsman service, eighteen (18) years of age or older who espouse the principals and purposes of the Marine Corps League including those who have served honorably in other branches of the Armed Forces of the United States. Upon acceptance, associate members will receive a membership pin and membership card, and are entitled to the same rights, privileges and benefits as regular members with the exception of those outlined under “Associate Membership Restrictions.”

Regular Membership Eligibility Criteria
Regular membership in the Marine Corps League is open to those whose service is characterized as one or more of the following conditions:
Currently serving or served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty for a period not less than ninety (90) days;
Currently serving or served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and have earned no less than ninety (90) Reserve Retirement Credits;
Currently serving or served honorably as a U.S. Navy Corpsman who has trained with Marine FMF units in excess of ninety (90) days and who has earned the the Marine Corps Device or the Warfare device authorized for wear on the Service Ribbon.

Regular Membership Supporting Documentation
A photo-static copy of an applicant’s most recent Honorable Discharge Certificate (DD Form 256MC or DD Form 256N) or Release from Active Duty (DD Form 214/215) is required with each regular membership application to provide evidence or satisfactory service. For those currently serving on active duty, a photo-static copy of their Military ID Card is required.

Associate Membership Restrictions
The following restrictions apply for those accepted as associate members:
Associate members may not hold elective office;
Associate members may not cast votes in matters regarding the election of officers or membership applications. Associate members will be permitted to cast votes per the discretion of the Detachment Commandant on matters regarding Detachment affairs, provided such matters do not impact a policy of the Marine Corps League;
Associate members will not wear any uniform items that they are prohibited from wearing by the current Marine Corps League uniform regulations.

Membership Dues
Membership dues are individually set by each detachment, payable at the time a regular or associate membership application is submitted.

Application Procedure
Those eligible and interested in becoming either a regular or associate member should complete the membership application. Applications are interactive and will permit users to type all necessary information directly onto the application. The application should then be printed, signed and mailed, along with the necessary supporting documentation and annual membership dues to:

Marine Corps League
National Headquarters
Membership Department

Merrifield, VA 22116-3070

Application Review
The Adjutant/Paymaster will review all membership applications and supporting documents and advise applicants as to the date, time, and location of the next General Membership Meeting. At the next General Membership Meeting, all applicants will be introduced to the membership and will be permitted to remain at the meeting as visitors. At the point in the meeting where membership applications are reviewed and voted on by the membership, applicants will be dismissed from the meeting to preserve the integrity and confidentiality of the voting process. Following this process, applicants will be asked to return to the meeting and will be informed as to the results of their application. Those denied membership will receive a full refund of their membership dues that were provided with their application.

  1. When does your membership year begin? As with other veteran organizations, they start in July.
    I would like to join but I don’t want to get socked for dues in a few months. I’m on a limited income.

    Thanks

    1. Every members renewal date is individually based on the date when you joined. In other words we do not have a universal membership year, your membership is good for one year after the date of your joining/renewal.

  2. How does one go about joining? I looked at the district map and the links are all broken for my area, La Crosse…

    In addition it looks like everything here is out dated… anything new?

    1. Semper Fi David, all of the links on the “Detachments by District” page were linked to the old http://www.mcleague.com webpage that was taken down during the changeover in leadership. To date there has been no replacement national website listing of detachments to link to. If you find the document on the CONTACT page titled “Department of Wisconsin Detachment Rosters:” you should be able to locate the detachments you are looking for and contact them via the email links provided there. Good luck and Semper Fi!
